How to Audit Your Site for AI Visibility

Most sites have never been checked for whether AI models can actually read, understand, and trust them, as opposed to whether they rank on Google, which is a related but different question. Here’s the checklist we run through on every engagement, in the order it actually matters.

Quick Answer

Auditing a site for AI visibility means checking six things in order: whether AI crawlers can reach you, entity clarity, structured data accuracy, content structure, third party consistency, and finally, actually asking ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity directly what they know about you. That last step is the single most revealing one, and the one almost nobody does before working with an agency.

Key Takeaways
  • It’s surprisingly common to find GPTBot, ClaudeBot, or PerplexityBot accidentally blocked in robots.txt, sometimes left over from a security plugin’s default settings.
  • If a model can’t tell your brand apart from a similarly named company, or your description varies across pages and profiles, that inconsistency actively works against you before anything else on the checklist matters.
  • Inconsistent entity information is the single most common issue found in audits, and one of the easiest to start fixing.

1. Confirm AI Crawlers Can Actually Reach You

Check your robots.txt for GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, and Google Extended specifically. It’s surprisingly common to find one of these accidentally blocked, sometimes left over from a security plugin’s default settings, which silently removes you from consideration no matter how good the rest of your site is.

2. Check Entity Clarity

Can a model tell, unambiguously, who you are? Search your own brand name and see what comes back. If there’s another company with a similar name, or if your description varies across your homepage, About page, and social profiles, that inconsistency actively works against you. We cover this in depth in our entity SEO guide.

Search your own brand name and see what comes back. If a model can’t tell you apart from a similarly named company, nothing else on this list matters yet.

3. Audit Structured Data

Check for Organization, Service, Article, and FAQ schema across your key pages, not just whether it exists, but whether it’s accurate and consistent with your visible content. See our FAQ schema guide and full structured data guide for implementation specifics.

4. Review Content Structure

Is your content organized as a content hub with real topical depth, or a scattered collection of one off pages? Do your most important pages answer the core question in the first sentence or two, or make the reader, and the model, dig for it?

5. Check Third Party Consistency

AI models weigh third party mentions heavily as a trust signal. Check that your name, description, and category are represented consistently across directories, review sites, and any press coverage. Inconsistent third party listings are one of the slowest problems to fix, so they’re worth identifying early.

6. Actually Ask the AI Models

Open ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity and ask each one directly what they know about you and whether they’d recommend you for the problem you solve. This is the single most revealing step, and the one almost nobody does before working with us. It’s also exactly what we do first in a full AEO audit, we’ll show you precisely what each engine currently says.

FAQ

How is an AI visibility audit different from an SEO audit?
An SEO audit focuses on ranking factors for traditional search. An AI visibility audit adds crawler access, entity clarity, structured data accuracy, and what AI models actually say about you when asked directly.

How long does an audit take?

What’s the most common issue you find?
Inconsistent entity information, a brand description, name, or category that varies across the homepage, About page, and third party listings, is the single most common issue we see, and one of the easiest to start fixing.
