Sources: BrightEdge AI search tracking, February 2026, and SparkToro clickstream analysis, 2026. Both general findings. Worth noting that Ahrefs measured the same overlap independently and landed in the same place, under 20%. Two datasets, two methods, one conclusion.
The Right Fit
- The site already ranks reasonably, top 10 or ideally top 20, but rarely or never shows up inside an AI Overview, Perplexity citation, or voice answer.
- Content reads well for a person but buries the actual answer three paragraphs down.
- Competitors with weaker rankings are the ones getting quoted instead.
- A real technical foundation is already in place, or being built alongside this, since AEO compounds fastest on a site Google and AI crawlers can already read cleanly.
What’s Included
Answer First Content Rewrites
Restructuring pages so the direct answer appears in the first sentence rather than three paragraphs in. That is the format AI engines are built to extract. How completely a passage answers the whole question, not just the keyword in it, is the part most content gets wrong.
FAQ and Schema Markup
Explicit, machine readable question and answer structure so engines do not have to infer what your page is answering. We will tell you what schema does not do, too: Ahrefs ran a controlled test and found adding it produces no automatic citation lift. Cited pages disproportionately carry schema, but that is correlation. Its real job is removing ambiguity, so the answer you wrote is the answer the engine extracts.
Real Question Research
Mining the exact phrasing people use when they ask AI assistants questions in your category, not generic SEO keywords. These are rarely the same string.
Content Cluster Depth
A page sitting inside a well linked cluster reads as more complete and authoritative to an AI summarization layer than an isolated page covering the same topic. One good answer surrounded by nothing is a weaker signal than the same answer surrounded by depth.
Title and Snippet Tuning
The unglamorous half of the work, and it moves numbers. On one client page we cut the title from 60 characters to 52 so the word buyers were actually searching stopped truncating in the result. It had been sitting at position 7 with zero clicks across 306 impressions. The content was already fine. The snippet was the problem.
Citation Tracking
Monitoring which of your pages actually get quoted across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, Perplexity, and Google’s AI Overviews. We run the prompts a buyer would run and record what comes back. No platform reports this to you, so somebody has to go look.
How This Gets Built
- Diagnose. Check current AI Overview and citation presence against the real questions your buyers ask.
- Restructure. Move the direct answer to the top of each target page, backed by schema.
- Deepen. Sit each rewritten page inside a real content cluster. Isolated answers get cited less than ones surrounded by supporting depth.
- Track. Monitor which pages get quoted, and fix the ones that do not.
Why Getting Quoted Now Beats Getting Ranked
A ranking inside a list of links earns less every quarter. Each figure below is labeled with what kind of evidence it is, because a clickstream study and a buyer survey do not prove the same thing.
Sources: Pew Research Center panel study, 6sense Buyer Experience Report (roughly 4,000 respondents), NP Digital analysis of 60 client campaigns. In the September 2026 review we removed a “35% more clicks for cited brands” figure from this section. We traced it to a Seer Interactive study that actually reports different numbers, from 2024. If we cannot stand behind a number we do not print it.
Proof, With the Numbers Attached
Ask ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, or Perplexity which marathons to run near St. Petersburg or Tampa and the race comes back in the answer. All five. That is the outcome AEO is actually for, and it is an internal observation from our own prompt testing, not a number any platform hands you.
Underneath it, the search side. Every figure below is a client result pulled from that client’s own Google Search Console and Race Roster accounts, covering June 9 to September 8, 2026.
Over the same window, registration pace ran 540% ahead of the four months before the work, with the launch week burst stripped out of the math. That is correlation and we are leaving it there. Pricing, email, and the race’s own community move registrations too.

Being Quotable Is Not a One Time Fix
A smaller competitor with sharper answer first content and better schema can get quoted by AI Overviews and Perplexity instead of you, no matter how established your brand is. A bigger competitor with unstructured, buried content is just as beatable if your pages actually answer the question.
Every week your content stays unstructured, someone else is getting quoted in the answers your buyers are already asking for.

FAQ
My brand is well known. Why would I not already get quoted?
Reputation does not structure a page for extraction. A smaller, less recognized competitor with cleaner answer first formatting and schema gets quoted over a bigger name constantly. Recognition and citation run on different signals.
What is AEO?
Answer Engine Optimization is the practice of structuring content so AI answer engines, meaning Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, and voice assistants, select it as the source they quote or cite in a direct answer.
How is AEO different from SEO?
They are connected, and both matter. SEO builds the crawlable, well structured foundation. AEO wins the specific passage an engine lifts into a synthesized answer. A page can rank first and still never get quoted. BrightEdge found only about 17% of the sources cited in AI Overviews also rank in the organic top 10, which means roughly 83% of citations go to pages that are not on page one at all.
Does FAQ schema actually help?
Honest answer: less than most agencies imply. Ahrefs ran a controlled test and found adding schema produces no automatic citation lift. Cited pages do disproportionately carry it, but that is correlation, not proof. Its real job is removing ambiguity so the answer you wrote is the answer the engine extracts, which is why we pair it with answer first rewrites instead of selling it as a shortcut.
How many AI Overviews actually appear on real searches?
About 48% of tracked Google queries as of February 2026, up from roughly 30% a year earlier, per BrightEdge. Separately, SparkToro found 68% of US Google searches now end without a click on anything.
How fast does AEO show results?
Faster than most search work. Structure and schema changes can affect what gets quoted within days of a recrawl, which is why we start with your highest intent pages. Consistent citation share across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and AI Overviews builds over the following one to three months as more pages get restructured and tracked.
How do you prove a page is actually getting cited?
By running the prompts and recording what comes back. No platform reports citation share to you, so there is no dashboard to point at. We test the questions your buyers actually ask across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, and Perplexity, log the results, and repeat it on a schedule. We label that as an internal observation when we report it, because that is what it is.
Does a single optimized page get cited, or does it need supporting content?
Supporting content helps significantly. Pages embedded in a deep, well linked content cluster read as more topically complete to AI summarization systems than an isolated page answering the same question.
